Fauvist Self-Portraits
We began by talking about what a self-portrait is, and remembered that it is a drawing of yourself. Each student then drew their faces the best they could. We then looked at a PowerPoint presentation of what Fauvist paintings are. Fauvism is a style of painting with vivid expressionistic and non-naturalistic use of color that flourished in Paris from 1905. In kid-friendly terms, we noticed that you could tell that the subject matter in each painting was realistic and recognizable, but the colors within each fauvist painting were wild and colorful! So the students outlined their pencil lines with very colorful oil pastels. The students then painted their portraits in using unrealistic watercolors to create beautiful and bright fauvist style self-portraits.

"Over and Under"
Alysa Zion, my student teacher taught a great lesson about how animals need to hibernate and adapt to survive. She began by reading the book entitled, "Over and Under". The students then explored the different layers of land and also went outside to collect leaves and dirt to create a den for their animal. Lesson attached here.
