Kinder Self Portraits
At the beginning of the school year, we create self-portraits. This can be challenging for some, being the very first lesson of the year. Self-portraits are made up of simple shapes. Each Kinder was also asked to draw in a background to show special interests. The Kinders then colored everything in the best they can using crayon and marker. We will also create self-portraits at the end of the year to compare and see growth.

The Kinders are currently finishing up their shape and line unit. During this unit we’ve identified and created line designs, symmetry, shapes, and the students understand that lines build shapes, and shapes build objects. The kinders have most recently created shape birds out of shapes, and are now covering them with a variety of textures. They will finish by doing texture plate rubbings in the background for another texture discovery.
The link below will take you to the Needham Art Scope and Sequence where you can find where this lesson aligns with standards and any connections to IB units.

October 2015
Spider Webs We began by reading "The Very Busy Spider", by Eric Carle. The students then used line and shape to create a spider web and a spider on it. The students traced over their lines with oil pastel. The students finished by watercolor painting in the background and seeing how oil pastel resists the paint. this was a fun and simple way for the students to be introduced to watercolor painting. |

Romero Britto Animals and Storytelling
My student teacher Alysa Zion taught this lesson that focused on the students creating an animal and a toy or something the animal interacts with to create a story from. She showed examples of Romero Britto's animals and style of artwork. The students marble painted in the background and used black paint and trinkets to create their animals. Click here for her lesson plan.

Alysa Zion also created a cute lesson on reindeer for the Kinders to enjoy before break. she showed a short non fiction clip from YouTube including facts about reindeers. The students then cut and glued their reindeer head on, traced hands for antlers, drew in a background and glued on a very important nose. The students really enjoyed this project.
