Self Portrait
Inspired by Henri Matisse
We began by looking at Henri Matisse’s work later in his career. We focused on his artwork that he called “drawing with scissors”. During the past part of Matisse’s life, he became ill and was either in his bed or a wheel chair and found it too difficult to continue to paint. Instead of painting, he continued to create amazing art by cutting out large, curvy, shapes of paper and gluing them onto contrasting sheets to create patterns and beautiful imagery. This inspired the portraits the 5th graders created. Each student began by creating a contrasting pattern in the background of their portraits. The students then began building their portraits with the head, neck, and ears first. The hair was quite a challenge for some. The students added in facial features and accessories. Each student finished their portrait by writing a 3 sentence bibliography and attached to the base of their portrait. Great work 5th graders!

Superhero Posters
The students started the year by creating Learner Profile and Attitude Superhero Posters. The students worked very hard on creating a superhero that models the Learner Profile or attitude of their choice. We began by looking at Super heroes and how to draw the body. We also talked about the importance of creating an interesting background and how we want to communicate where each superhero is and what they are doing.
Currently in November, the posters are displayed in the Multi Purpose Room and the school is voting on their favorite. The winner will have color copies made and will get theirs hung around school. The winner will also get a color copy framed and hung in the front of the school and recognition at Pledge. The rest of the posters will be displayed in the library for the remainder of the year.

Conflict Murals
The students are learning about the concept of Conflict and Conflict Resolution. In art class, we began by brainstorming all the information the students know about both conflict and resolution. Each class then came up with a collaborative and creative idea to visually communicate their thoughts onto a mural. Each class started with pencil, then painting or oil pastel, and finally finishing details. Each student ill also reflect on their participation, effort, and how they feel it went. This is usually not the students favorite art project...it's very difficult to work with 20 other students on creating something. It's also very important for students to have group based projects. It forces students to communicate and collaborate which are important life skills.

December 2015
Almost every student I've ever taught art to loves to use clay and sculpt objects. There is no exception for the 5th graders' at Needham. The students objectives for this project were to create an animal by using realistic features of the animal...color did not matter and the students could be as creative as they wanted to be. We started by drawing a plan on a piece of paper, choosing clay colors, and then they began sculpting. Some students made these into ornaments for gifts and other students made figurines.
