Fruit Faces
Inspired by Guiseppe Arcimboldo
We began by learning about Guiseppe Arcimbldo who was a Mannerist painter from Milan, Italy in the 1500’s. A mannerist painter is someone who portrays close relationships between human and nature in art. Guiseppe was most well-known for creating portraits out of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and roots. We studied his paintings and talked about what we noticed. The students then created their own “fruit faces” by drawing in large and overlapping fruit for facial features. The students then added in a light source by creating white highlights consistently on the side of each piece of fruit. The students then created shadows on the opposite side of the light source of the fruit.

Fruit Faces
We began by looking at images painted by Guiseppe Arcimboldo. to view the slide show, click here. The students were then shown examples of human faces and fruit. they were then to draw a face completely out of fruit and vegetables- it's more difficult than it looks. We then learned about value and light source, so the students added in both elements to make an even more realistic effect.

The students are currently learning about the concept of energy and energy transformation in their class.
We began by looking at artwork by Keith Haring. The students noticed right away that Haring would create very simple people doing silly stuff. As a class, we had around 15 volunteers to model one by one for the class in an energetic pose. The students had 1 minute to draw their classmates. The students then filled them in with black and white zentangles (unplanned patterns and designs) and then chose 3 colors to outline the figures with in a repetitive pattern.

How do you paint sound?
This lesson focused on the students exploring what sound would look like. Each student received 10 small squares and they heard 10 different sounds and each student drew what they thought each sound should look like. The students then placed their squares together to create a successful composition. The students then outlined and painted in their pics. Here lesson is attached here.

The 4th graders had a great time learning how to print. We created winter cards by carving into Styrofoam plates with a pencil. The students really had to focus on using a variety of texture and also creating a successful composition. The students then learned about the print making process and rolling a brayer into ink and rolling it on their plate. I was so impressed with how quickly the students picked it up. We had a great and messy time!
